When the doctors told him his wife had only a few days left, he leaned over her hospital bed.
Masking his satisfaction with a cold, almost smug smile, he whispered: “Soon, everything you have will belong to me.”
Alejandro had been absent for almost a full day. Lucía knew him too well—he never abandoned anything he considered his.

If he disappeared, it was to orchestrate his schemes from the shadows. The first changes were subtle, noticed only by Carmen Ruiz.
After a careful adjustment to Lucía’s treatment, her lab results began to improve. The liver readings that had been steadily worsening now stabilized.
When Alejandro finally returned, impeccably groomed and wearing a mask of concern, he asked, “How is she?”
“Stable,” Carmen replied calmly. Lucía, pale and weary, whispered, “I’m tired.”
“I’ve already consulted the lawyer, just in case her condition takes a turn,” Alejandro added.
“Always planning ahead,” she murmured, a faint edge of irony in her voice.
A moment of tension lingered before Carmen appeared with a tray, diverting Alejandro’s attention.
Later, he was called by the hospital’s medical director.

Investigation revealed irregularities in the medication orders—some drugs he had authorized were inappropriate for Lucía’s condition.
After discontinuing them, her health had notably improved. Alejandro left visibly unsettled.
That evening, he confronted her directly.
“The truth,” she said with unwavering calm, “no one will believe you. You were sedated.”
“Not entirely,” he countered, frustration creeping in.
Authorities promptly restricted his visitation privileges as the review unfolded. Through it all, Lucía remained steadfast.
In the days that followed, her test results continued to improve.

The inquiry confirmed that Alejandro had exceeded his authority, making unauthorized medical decisions.
Though still weak, Lucía began to sit upright, Carmen by her side.
“This is just the start,” she said quietly. It was about reclaiming her independence, her voice, her dignity. Alejandro had misjudged her entirely.
Soon, sunlight spilled into her room, bringing with it undeniable proof: Alejandro was under investigation for meddling in her care for personal gain.
“He’s nervous,” Carmen observed.
“So was I,” Lucía replied. “The difference is… I learned.”
The quiet in the room no longer spoke of defeat.
It was the calm before a new beginning.
