The son felt embarrassed by his mother, a cleaner, in front of the bride’s family, but at his own wedding, she became the center of attention.
Marina observed her son, Ilya, as he tried on his new suit. Tomorrow, he was getting married, and it was hard for her to grasp. Ilya inspected himself in the mirror, admiring the fit of the suit.
«It’s a stylish outfit,» he commented, turning to her. «The color looks expensive.»

Marina smiled softly, though inside she thought, It is expensive. «I’m happy you like it. I’m sure I’ll be in tears at the wedding when I see you in full dress.»
Ilya’s expression shifted to something more serious. «Mom, we agreed you wouldn’t be there. With all the high society people at the wedding, you’ll stick out. I don’t want to be worried about you. It’s better if you stay away.»
Marina was taken aback, feeling a knot tighten in her stomach. «What do you mean? I thought you were joking about that.»
«No, Mom. Vika’s family is wealthy. You’ll feel out of place. Let’s just meet the day after the wedding, okay?» The sting of his words hit Marina harder than she expected. He was ashamed of her.
«I’ll look nice. I’ll get my hair done, my nails too, and wear a nice dress,» she protested, but Ilya was already dismissing her. «That blue dress? It’s old, Mom.»
He stood his ground. «I’ll make it simple. I don’t want you there. I’m embarrassed you’re a cleaner. I don’t want you ruining this for me.»
Marina sat, frozen and silent, as Ilya left. The house felt empty. Hours passed before she opened an old photo album, flipping through the pages filled with memories of her painful past.
There was a picture of young Marina, blue-eyed and in a second-hand dress, standing next to a woman she barely remembered—her mother, who had lost custody of her.

Marina had never tried to search for her. The orphanage had been harsh, and life after was no easier. A photo of ten-year-old Marina stood out.
Her curly hair framed her face as she stood in a group shot from the orphanage, a reminder of her tough years—stealing food, uncaring staff, and unrelenting bullying.
After school, Marina worked long hours as a waitress in a roadside café. It wasn’t glamorous, but it gave her independence and an eye for fashion on a budget.
One summer, Marina found herself in a meadow with a dark-haired boy, Maxim, who wore a crown of flowers. That was one of the happiest memories she had, a reminder of a carefree time.
She met Maxim when she worked at the café. One busy afternoon, she accidentally spilled tomato juice on him. His expensive shirt was ruined. Stas, the manager, hurried over, worried about Marina’s job.
«It’s fine,» Maxim said, handing her his car keys. «I’ll change at my parents’ house. Can you grab the backpack from the back seat?» Stas grabbed the keys, shaking his head at Marina.
Left alone with Maxim, Marina felt a mix of nervousness and excitement. But their story didn’t last. Maxim’s cousin spotted them together and told his father, the mayor.
Soon, Marina found herself the target of rumors—false accusations that she was a drug addict and prostitute. To protect Maxim, she stayed quiet, but his father soon forced him to choose between Marina and his future.

Two weeks before he left for London, Maxim’s father made it clear: break up with Marina or face severe consequences. Marina couldn’t imagine life without him.
When Maxim left, her life took a dark turn. Her boss, Stas, framed her for a crime, and with the mayor’s influence, she was sentenced to three years in prison. It was there that she discovered she was pregnant with Ilya.
After serving a year and a half, Marina was released and reunited with her son. Life was hard, but she worked tirelessly—cleaning, working at a car wash, and sewing—never dwelling on the past.
She focused on raising Ilya and providing for him, even when it meant sacrificing her own happiness.
Years passed, and Marina eventually learned that Stas had gone bankrupt, the mayor’s family had moved to Moscow, and Maxim had married someone else.
Marina wiped away the tear that had escaped as she prepared for her day. She suited up for work, cleaning at the local restaurant. She had given everything for Ilya, yet now, he didn’t want her at his wedding.
But something inside her stirred. She’d spent too much of her life putting others first, and now it was time to do something for herself. She dipped into her savings and treated herself to a new outfit, a visit to the beautician, and a fresh look.
Her appearance at the registry office caused a stir. She looked years younger, and many of the guests—particularly the men—were taken aback by her transformation.

Ilya, however, looked visibly uncomfortable, but Marina had already seen all she needed to. When he invited her to the restaurant afterward, she politely declined.
During the reception, Marina took the microphone to offer a speech, wishing the newlyweds well. As she stepped off the stage, she ran into Maxim, her long-lost love.
They caught up, and Maxim shared how he’d been misled by his father, thinking Marina had moved on. After hearing the truth, Maxim admitted he had never been happy in his marriage, and his thoughts had always returned to Marina.
They talked for an hour, and Marina, with a wistful smile, suggested they save the sad stories for another time and invited him to dance. Ilya watched from a distance, seeing his mother in a new light.
He realized, with a sudden pang of guilt, how much she had sacrificed for him. When he saw her leaving with Maxim, he hurried to catch up.
«Mom, where are you going?» he asked, out of breath. «I’m leaving. You wanted me to,» Marina replied, then introduced Maxim as her partner.
Stunned, Ilya stood there, grappling with the revelation that his mother’s life hadn’t stopped with his birth, and that a new chapter was unfolding for her.
