The Remarkable Tale of Binti Jua: The Gorilla Who Captivated the World

In a world filled with uncertainty and chaos, moments occasionally occur that remind us of the deep connections we share with all living beings.

One such unforgettable moment took place at the Brookfield Zoo in Illinois over 20 years ago. It was in 1996 when Binti Jua, a 160-pound female gorilla, performed a stunning act of compassion that would go down in history, capturing the hearts of millions.

The Unlikely Hero

It was a warm summer afternoon when a 3-year-old boy’s innocent trip to the zoo turned into a terrifying event. As the child climbed a barrier surrounding the gorilla enclosure, he fell 25 feet, injuring himself seriously.

Screams of horror echoed from the boy’s mother and bystanders as the incident unfolded. Inside the enclosure, seven gorillas were calmly lounging, including Binti Jua, a rare western lowland female.

Jeff Bruno, a member of the Kankakee Fire Department, was at the zoo with his family that day and still vividly recalls the moment. “August 16th — 2:10 p.m.,” Jeff told CBS in 2016.

As they heard the screams and witnessed Binti Jua’s incredible response, Jeff and his family watched in awe. The boy, having hit his head during the fall, had lost consciousness.

Jeff offered his help, while his brother-in-law quickly grabbed his camera to capture the remarkable sequence of events. This footage would later be shared worldwide, stunning viewers everywhere.

In the midst of the panic, the unexpected happened. Binti Jua calmly approached the unconscious child.

A Maternal Instinct Kicks In

Despite the potential danger, Binti Jua’s maternal instincts immediately took over. In the video, you can see her scanning the area, seemingly searching for help.

It’s extraordinary how she instinctively knew how to respond. With gentleness, she cradled the boy in her arms, protecting him. Her own baby, Koola, was still on her back.

Zoo staff quickly acted, using a hose to move the other gorillas out of the way. Binti Jua laid the boy down near the exhibit’s entrance, before stepping back, allowing zookeepers and paramedics to safely take over.

Jeff recalled, “We assessed the boy and packed him up. I think we used duct tape because that’s all that was available.” Some believe that Binti Jua’s actions were intentional, driven by an understanding that the boy needed to be moved to safety.

Although the child had sustained injuries, including a broken hand and some bruises, he survived the ordeal.

A Worldwide Symbol of Compassion

The story of Binti Jua’s act of heroism spread quickly, becoming a symbol of empathy and compassion. People marveled at the bond between the gorilla and the human child.

The zoo faced little criticism following the incident, and in fact, the media was captivated by the gorilla who had unintentionally become a hero.

In the months that followed, visitors flocked to the zoo, eager to witness the gentle and protective gorilla.  She was showered with special attention and treats from the staff, and was even named Hero of the Year by Newsweek.

People magazine also listed her among its “Most Intriguing People,” despite her being an animal. What’s truly remarkable is that Binti Jua’s actions weren’t merely a result of zoo training.

Although she had been hand-raised and taught how to care for infant gorillas, her instinctive behavior reflected deep empathy—something experts like primatologist Frans de Waal argue shows true animal altruism.

Her actions proved that the desire to protect, nurture, and care for others is not limited to humans, but is a universal trait that transcends species. What Happened After the Incident?

The event sparked debates. Some experts questioned whether Binti Jua’s behavior was simply a result of training, while others believed it was an expression of innate empathy.

As Binti Jua had been raised by humans after being rejected by her biological mother at birth, she underwent special training that allowed her to care for infant gorillas and bring them to zoo personnel for check-ups.

This training might have helped her navigate the situation, but her actions clearly demonstrated a natural, protective instinct.

Gorillas have long been portrayed as aggressive, thanks in part to Hollywood films like King Kong. However, as Binti Jua’s actions proved, this stereotype could not have been further from the truth.

A similar incident occurred a few years later with another gorilla named Jambo at Jersey Zoo, who protected a child who had fallen into his enclosure.

But no matter what motivations lay behind such compassionate acts, the beauty of these actions remains undeniable.

The Boy Binti Jua Saved

Details about the boy’s identity remain scarce, as his parents requested privacy. However, it is known that he was initially listed in critical condition but later recovered well, expected to make a full recovery.

He suffered head injuries, a broken hand, and some bruises. A few days after the incident, his doctor shared an update, stating that the boy was doing remarkably well.

“He’s acting quite normally. He doesn’t remember anything about the events, and we haven’t asked him about it,” the doctor explained.

The extraordinary actions of Binti Jua, and the compassion she showed, continue to be remembered as a testament to the empathy that exists in all creatures, reminding us that kindness knows no bounds.
