The Boy and the Man from the River
Aurelio and the Man from the River
Aurelio had never heard applause before. The sound of clapping and the curious eyes around him felt like a distant dream compared to the harsh life he knew.

Covered in mud, he simply wanted to catch his breath. Don Esteban Vargas, the elegant man he had rescued, watched him quietly.
«What’s your name, boy?» he asked. «Aurelio Mendoza,» the boy replied. «Where are your parents?» «I don’t have any.
Just my grandmother… but she passed away three months ago.»
A heavy silence fell. One of Vargas’s bodyguards offered Aurelio money, but the boy shook his head.
«I didn’t save you for money,» he said. Vargas felt a pang in his chest.
Used to flattery and deference, he was humbled by the boy’s dignity.
That night, he couldn’t sleep. The next morning, he sent for Aurelio and found him shivering on a park bench. «Aurelio,» he called.
The boy flinched. «It’s okay,» Vargas said, sitting beside him. «You saved my life.» «Anyone would have done the same,» Aurelio mumbled.
«No. Only you.» Aurelio lowered his gaze. «My grandmother used to say, when someone’s in danger, you don’t think — you just help.»
«She was wise,» Vargas replied with a gentle smile. After a pause, Vargas said, «I want to make you an offer. Come live with me.

You’ll have food, clothes, and the chance to study.» Aurelio hesitated.
«My grandmother said no one gives anything for free.»
«She was right. But what I want to give you is a chance — one I never had as a child.» The boy took a deep breath.
«If I come… do you promise you won’t send me away later?» «I promise.»
From that day on, Aurelio slept in a clean room and studied diligently under Vargas’s guidance.
He learned reading, math, and etiquette, growing in confidence and inspiring those around him. But life had another test in store.
Vargas was accused of embezzling funds from a children’s hospital.
Headlines labeled him corrupt, and even his allies turned away.
Aurelio watched the man he had saved face ruin and remembered his grandmother’s words:

«When the world turns its back, stand tall and look to the sky.»
Encouraged by the boy, Vargas confronted the media, presented proof, and exposed the real culprits.
Speaking of Aurelio, he said: «This boy taught me the true value of honesty and hope.»
The story of the “boy from the river” moved the entire city.
Yet Aurelio’s only desire was to help children like himself.
Years later, he and Vargas founded the Esperanza Foundation, providing education and care to underprivileged children.
Vargas realized that true power did not come from wealth but from a heart willing to act selflessly.
And Aurelio — the boy who had once jumped into the river to save a man — now saved countless others, armed with love, courage, and hope.
