Son Embarrassed by His One-Eyed Mother, Brings a Stand-In to His Graduation

Son Ashamed of His One-Eyed Mother, Hides Her from His Life—A Decade Later, the Truth Hits Him Hard

Almost nobody knew Derek Ryder had a mother. From childhood through high school, he never mentioned her or invited friends over.

Video games, movies, sleepovers—nothing at his home ever involved his mother. When he started dating, he made excuses:  “My mom is super religious, she won’t let me see anyone.”

It was a lie—he was ashamed of Gail Ryder. His mother had one eye and a scarred face. As a child, he hadn’t noticed; she was just Mom. But as he grew older, he saw how others reacted—and felt humiliated.

The first day of school, he panicked when he realized the other children noticed her too. “I don’t want you to walk me to the gate, Mom! I can go in by myself,” he said.

“But honey, everyone’s mom does this… and you’re still little,” she replied gently. “You’re a FREAK!” Derek shouted. “Bobby’s mom said it. Everyone will think I’m a freak too!”

From that day forward, Gail never walked him into school again. She dropped him off from a distance, hiding her tears as her son turned away. Derek kept her out of his public life, spinning stories to anyone who asked.

Years later, Derek became valedictorian. The headmaster clapped him on the shoulder: “I hope we finally meet your mother!”

Panic set in. He couldn’t let Gail attend. So he hired an actress from an agency to play the part of the perfect mother: kind-faced, unscarred, and everything Derek wished his mom had been.

He coached her on what to say and how to dress, arranging for her to pick him up from home. When Gail saw him in his graduation gown, her eyes lit up. “Derek! Is it today? Let me get dressed!”

“Dressed? For what?” he snapped. “To go to your graduation, honey!” “You’re not going,” Derek said coldly. “I’ve spent my life hiding you. Do you think I want you embarrassing me with your… face?”

Tears filled Gail’s one eye. “Derek… how can you say that?” “You’re a freak,” he yelled. “I’ve been ashamed of you my whole life. I’ve hired someone to take your place. Understand?”

Gail nodded silently, heartbroken. “I’m sorry, my son…” Two weeks later, Derek moved to California for college and never contacted her again. Ten years later, Derek learned that his mother had passed away.

Friends had arranged the funeral, but she had left him her house and a substantial estate. Shocked, Derek met her lawyer, Terry Arlington.

“Your mother left you nearly $700,000 plus her home, worth over $1.5 million,” the lawyer explained. “I… I don’t understand! She lived modestly,” Derek stammered.

Arlington revealed the truth. When Derek was three, he had approached a strange dog in the park. Gail threw herself between him and the animal, and in the attack, she lost an eye and was permanently scarred.

Derek’s heart shattered. It could have been me… he whispered. “She was one of the bravest, most selfless people I’ve ever known,” Arlington said gently. “A true hero.”

Derek went straight to her grave, tears streaming down his face. “Oh Mom… you saved me, and I was so cruel to you. Please forgive me…” From that day on, he vowed never to hide his past.

He placed a photo of his mother on his desk, her glasses shielding her scars, and every time he looked at it, he remembered her sacrifice, her courage, and his own selfishness.
