Neighbors secretly criticize the 50-year-old pregnant woman behind her back
Amanda and the women in her book club quickly formed an opinion about a 50-year-old pregnant neighbor without knowing the full story. Only after learning the truth behind her pregnancy did they regret their harsh judgments.
Amanda, in her 60s and happily single, had never married nor had children. To keep busy, she ran a weekly neighborhood book club in her home, where local women gathered each Saturday.

Over the years, Amanda got along only with those in her book club. Her love for order meant she often grew irritated if a neighbor’s child broke a flowerpot or left a mess on her side of the street.
Because of this, the local children kept their distance, never offering her the baked goods and homemade juices they sold every summer, which others happily supported.
One day, Amanda ran into Jane, a 50-year-old neighbor she hadn’t spoken to before, at the grocery store. Jane was looking at junk food. “We shouldn’t be eating that kind of stuff now that we’re older,” Amanda told her.
Jane smiled politely, explaining that her household always had chips available for guests. Amanda pointed to a different brand, suggesting it was a better choice.
Jane thanked her for the advice, even though Amanda’s tendency to assert her opinions was well-known around the neighborhood.
Later, Amanda invited Jane to join the book club. «You must get bored on weekends. Why not join us?» she offered, handing Jane a flyer. Jane accepted, saying she’d see Amanda on Saturday.

Amanda felt pleased to recruit a new member. For the first two weeks, Jane attended, but then she started missing meetings.
Amanda was puzzled and a bit frustrated, particularly when Jane stopped answering her calls. A month passed, and Jane remained absent.
Amanda finally asked the other women in the club if they had seen Jane. “Is she out of the country?” she asked. They hadn’t heard from her since the last meeting.
Amanda decided to let it go until one day, while taking a walk, she saw Jane, her hand resting on a noticeably rounded belly.
The next day, Amanda couldn’t wait to share the news with the book club. «I swear Jane is pregnant!» she exclaimed. One woman agreed, noting that Jane’s belly had seemed large the other day.
“At her age, she should be watching grandchildren, not having a baby! It’s disgusting!” Amanda said, gossiping behind Jane’s back. «Tell me about it,» an elderly woman added.

«What’s the baby going to call her? Grandma? Can you imagine going to parent-teacher conferences with gray hair while all the other moms are in their thirties?” The group laughed in agreement.
Amanda continued with her mocking. “Who would want a child from her?” she scoffed.
A few days later, Amanda saw Jane again at the store. Jane was near the peanuts, caressing her belly. Amanda eagerly approached her, ready to ask who the father was.
Before diving into that question, she couldn’t resist commenting on the peanuts. “Pregnant women shouldn’t eat peanuts. They can cause allergies!” Amanda scolded.
Jane turned calmly. “I’m not allergic to peanuts, and my doctor said I’m perfectly healthy. I have the go-ahead to eat them,” she replied.
Amanda wasn’t convinced. “It doesn’t matter. You’re putting the baby in danger. You’re so selfish,” she retorted.
Suddenly, Jane looked sick, covering her mouth and rushing to the restroom. Amanda called after her. “Ugh, disgusting! That’s why women your age shouldn’t be having babies!” she shouted.

Just then, Jane’s daughter appeared with her husband. “What’s going on? Why are you yelling at my mom?” she asked.
Amanda was quick to explain, «I was just teaching her a lesson. She’s being selfish, buying junk food while pregnant. She’s putting the baby at risk. Plus, isn’t she a widow? How can she even think about sleeping around?”
Jane’s daughter was appalled. “With all due respect, ma’am, my mom’s pregnancy is none of your business,” she said. “But since you’re so interested, I’ve been trying to get pregnant for two years
. I had multiple miscarriages, surgery, and IVF, but nothing worked. The doctor said our chances were almost none. Adoption wasn’t an option for me.”
At that moment, Jane emerged from the bathroom. She heard her daughter confronting Amanda and stepped in.
“I offered to be a surrogate mother for my daughter so she and her husband could have the child they dreamed of,” Jane explained. “This is Billie, my daughter, and her husband, Timothy Watson.”

Amanda was stunned. As she processed what she had just heard, she realized Timothy Watson’s name sounded familiar. “Timothy Watson…” she murmured. Then it clicked.
Timothy Watson was the heir to a multi-million-dollar corporation in their state—the very company Amanda had once worked for. “I’m so sorry,” Amanda said immediately, her face flushing with embarrassment.
“I didn’t realize what a wonderful gift Jane was giving you. I truly didn’t know.” Billie shrugged it off. “You don’t have to apologize to me,” she said. But then she looked at Amanda, signaling her to understand.
“I’m sorry I judged you, Jane. I had no idea what you were going through. Please forgive me,” Amanda said, tears in her eyes. Jane forgave her, and Amanda vowed to be more mindful in the future.
When Jane gave birth, Amanda was the first to visit, right after Billie and Timothy. She offered to help with the baby whenever she could, determined to make up for her previous behavior.
Over time, Amanda and Jane became close friends, and Amanda learned a valuable lesson in humility and the importance of understanding others’ stories before jumping to conclusions.
