Spencer arrived earlier than expected, carrying a small white box.

“I thought we could make today a little more special,” he said.

Chloe smiled at him. “What did you bring?” He only grinned. “You’ll find out.” An hour later, the backyard was filled with laughter.

Lemonade sat on the tables beside cupcakes and tiny pink-and-blue decorations. In the center was the cake, covered by a glass dome.

Chloe stood beside Spencer, one hand resting gently over her growing belly.

After everything she had endured, I had never seen her this happy.

Then Spencer cleared his throat. “Before we cut the cake, there’s something I need everyone to know.”

Chloe turned toward him. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded document. My smile faded.

“What is that?” Chloe asked. Spencer looked at me first. Then he faced his wife. “These are the results from the clinic.”

Chloe’s expression changed immediately. “You told me everything was normal.” “It is,” he said quietly. “Mostly.”

He unfolded the paper. The conversations around us stopped.

“The baby is healthy,” Spencer continued. “But the genetic screening revealed something unexpected.”

Chloe’s face went pale. “What did they find?” Spencer hesitated. “A genetic match.” My stomach tightened.

“A match with whom?” He looked directly at Chloe. “The biological father.”

Nobody spoke. Chloe stared at him as if she couldn’t understand the words. “What are you saying?”

Spencer lowered the document. “The fertility clinic made a mistake four years ago.”

A glass slipped from someone’s hand and shattered against the patio. Chloe gripped the edge of the table.

Spencer’s voice trembled. “The embryos were accidentally switched.” For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Chloe whispered the question everyone was thinking. “Then whose baby am I carrying?” Spencer swallowed.

“That’s what the clinic has been trying to determine.” He reached into his pocket again.

But this time, it wasn’t another test result. It was a legal notice. The clinic had identified the biological father.

A donor whose identity was supposed to remain permanently confidential. Until now.

Chloe broke down. I immediately went to her and wrapped my arms around her.

“We’ll figure this out,” I whispered. She nodded, crying against my shoulder. Then Spencer took her hand.

“I don’t care what the DNA says,” he told her. “You are my wife. This child is ours. Nothing about a laboratory mistake changes that.”

Chloe slowly looked up at him. For a moment, she said nothing. Then she squeezed his hand.

And after four years of heartbreak, fear, and disappointment, a small smile finally appeared on her face.

Not because everything had turned out the way they imagined. But because she finally understood something that mattered far more than genetics:

Blood can create a connection. But love, loyalty, and the decision to stay can create a family.
