How Katie Holmes plans to handle Suri Cruise taking the lead has been made public
Katie Holmes is already strategizing on life as an empty nester as her daughter Suri Cruise prepares to relocate for college.
‘The members of my book club are going to get annoyed hearing from me,’ the 45-year-old actress told Town & Country’s September issue. ‘I’ll be like, «Let’s meet once a week.»‘
The publication noted how Holmes’ group currently meets about five times annually, as the most recent meeting convening focused on the 2023 Abraham Verghese book The Covenant of Water.
Holmes — who has nurtured Suri’s performance chops — spoke about how she plans to adapt, as the 18-year-old is reportedly preparing to move to Pittsburgh to attend Carnegie Mellon University.
Suri ‘is said to be interested in pursuing a career in fashion or acting,’ the magazine reported, which comes as Suri has lived with her mother in New York City for more than a decade.
Carnegie Mellon boasts a number of notable names in its list of College of Fine Arts alumni, including Oscar-winning actress Holly Hunter, 66, Hamilton star Leslie Odom Jr., 43,
Emmy-winner Billy Porter, 54, Star Trek actor Zachary Quinto, 47, Cheers star Ted Danson, 76, and late pop art icon Andy Warhol.
Town & Country noted how Suri ‘has contributed vocals to songs in two of Holmes’s films’ — the 2023 drama Rare Objects and 2022 romantic drama Alone Together.
‘I’m proud of my daughter,’ Holmes told Town & Country of her daughter with ex-husband Tom Cruise, 62. ‘Of course, I will miss the close proximity, but I’m really proud of her, and I’m happy.’
Holmes, speaking with Glamour in April 2023, said that she has sought to encourage Suri’s performing on her projects.
‘I hope she always does something on my films,’ Holmes said. ‘I always ask her.’
Holmes said that ‘both of those experiences came out of the same sense of what I love about our industry, which is, you have these projects, and you become a family with people.’
Holmes said she strived to create a ‘safe, beautiful, creative space’ for Suri to hone her craft as a performer.
‘So it comes out of love for me to include someone who I love dearly,’ Holmes said. ‘It was very meaningful to me to have her there, because she’s my heart.’
