Houston’s record is broken by Taylor Swift on the charts
Another day, another record shattered by the star power of Taylor Swift.
The pop singer, 34, achieved a new career high this week when her album The Tortured Poets Department debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 list for the twelfth week in a row, a position it has held since its release on April 19.
Billboard stated that in the process, Whitney Houston’s 1987 self-titled LP, which spent all 11 of its weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 following its initial release,
was exceeded by the singer’s 11th studio album, setting a new record. As a result, Swift’s most recent album is the first one by a female to debut at number one for 12 weeks.
With her surprise 2020 album Folklore, the 14-time Grammy winner previously broke Houston’s record of the most weeks ever spent at the top of the Billboard 200 chart, bringing her career total to 47 over the late icon’s 46.
With the triumph of «Fortnight,» her 12th number one on the chart, Swift also broke Houston’s record earlier this year, according to Forbes, for the fourth-most No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100.
Swift has broken the legendary record in music before, and this is neither the first nor the last time.
She surpassed the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Elvis Presley, only this past December, according to Billboard, by becoming the soloist with the most weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 after 1989 (Taylor’s Version) was released.
She had topped the chart for 68 weeks at that point, surpassing Elvis Presley, who had a record 67 weeks at No. 1 throughout the course of his ten albums from 1956 to 2002.
This year, Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department has dominated the highly sought-after album chart due to the publication of multiple more editions of the album on CD, vinyl, digital platforms, and more.
Some are unsure, though, if it will stay at the top as Eminem’s recently released album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grace), is expected to rank first on the July 27 Billboard 200.
