The storm had finally moved out to sea just before dawn when fisherman Elias noticed something unusual caught in his net.

At first glance, he thought it was a seal pup.

Then the tiny creature moved. Elias stared in disbelief.

It was a baby unlike anything he had ever seen. Its skin was pale and faintly luminous, thin webbing connected its tiny fingers, and beneath its body curled a delicate silver tail.

He could barely breathe. It was a mermaid.

Elias quickly freed the trembling infant and wrapped it tightly inside his jacket to protect it from the freezing wind. The baby whimpered softly as he carried it away from the crashing waves.

But the instant he turned toward the village, the crying stopped.

The little creature stared toward the sea with enormous blue eyes. Then it raised one tiny hand and pointed toward the water.

Elias turned around. There was nothing there. Only the dark ocean, rolling beneath a blanket of pale morning fog.

“Don’t be afraid,” he whispered. “I’ll keep you safe.”

The baby suddenly began to cry again. This time, something answered. A deep, powerful vibration traveled through the water.

Elias instinctively stepped backward. Far beyond the rocks, the surface of the ocean began to move.

Something huge was rising. First, a gigantic fin broke through the waves. Then another appeared. And then a third.

Elias stared in terror as enormous shapes emerged from the mist. The mermaid baby stretched its tiny hand toward them.

And suddenly, everything made sense. The creature hadn’t been abandoned on the beach. The violent storm had separated it from its family.

Those enormous beings approaching through the waves weren’t predators. They had come looking for their lost child.

Elias slowly walked to the shoreline and lowered the tiny mermaid toward the water. The baby turned back toward him.

For one brief moment, their eyes met, and Elias thought he saw a tiny smile. Then the creature slipped gently from his arms and vanished beneath the waves. The enormous silhouettes closed around it.

A few seconds later, the sea became strangely quiet. Elias walked back to the village alone. He never told anyone what had happened that morning. No one would have believed him anyway.

But every year, after the first powerful storm of the season, Elias returned to that same stretch of beach.

Because sometimes, just before sunrise, when the ocean was perfectly still, he could hear something beneath the waves. A tiny voice. Whispering his name.
