Cynthia Erivo Speaks Out Against ‘Dangerous’ Cyberbullying Targeting Wicked Co-Star Ariana Grande

Cynthia Erivo is standing firmly by Ariana Grande’s side.

The 37-year-old British actress, who stars as Elphaba alongside Grande’s Glinda in the highly anticipated musical Wicked, has spoken out in defense of her co-star amid criticism about Grande’s appearance.

During an event at the Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Dec. 6, Erivo addressed the issue directly. “Cyberbullying is incredibly dangerous,” she said, highlighting how easy it is for people to hide behind screens and make harmful comments about someone they don’t personally know.

Erivo encouraged fans to counter negativity with positivity. “Be the person who shares kindness,” she urged. “What someone who’s never met you thinks is never more important than what you think of yourself.”

Reflecting on her own experiences in the public eye, the Broadway star shared how she’s been subject to scrutiny since her late teens. “I’ve been a specimen in a Petri dish for years,” she said, visibly moved. “I’ve heard every kind of comment you can imagine.”

Grande, 31, also weighed in on the topic, describing the damaging nature of such remarks. “It’s difficult to shield yourself from that kind of noise,” she admitted.

“It’s uncomfortable no matter the scale—whether it’s online or even something as personal as a relative’s offhand comment about your appearance at Thanksgiving dinner.”

Both stars emphasized the importance of compassion, reminding others of the lasting impact words can have.

Along with Cynthia Erivo’s support, Ariana Grande expressed gratitude for the strong circle of people she has around her, who provide constant encouragement amid the criticism.

“I’m fortunate to have such a supportive network and to be confident in knowing and trusting that I’m beautiful,” Grande shared. “But I understand the weight of that external noise. It’s been a part of my life since I was 17.

I have so much love around me, and I don’t make space for negativity.”

Grande also offered a message of self-care, urging others to protect their peace. “You have to keep yourself safe because no one has the right to say anything harmful,” she said.
