Cher Shares the Name on Her Driver’s License After Discussing Birth Certificate Confusion
Cher’s driver’s license reflects exactly what her fans would expect.
During an appearance on *Jimmy Kimmel Live!* on January 7, the iconic performer discussed the second half of her memoir with Jimmy Kimmel.
*Cher: The Memoir*, Part One, released in November, became a New York Times bestseller shortly after.
Kimmel, 57, asked Cher, 78, about the last time she drove a car. She confessed that it had been a while but hinted that she had recently purchased a new vehicle. Kimmel then asked if Cher had a driver’s license and whether it included her last name.
«I don’t have a last name,» the *Moonstruck* star revealed, confirming that her driver’s license simply lists «Cher.» «I had to go to court for a special dispensation.
You have to prove that people could recognize you by that name. It’s not simple.» Kimmel joked that all Cher had to do was show up, and she’d be good to go. He then inquired whether Cher had ever served on jury duty, to which she responded, «They won’t take me.»
When Kimmel asked if it was due to her fame, Cher responded that it was because she would be «too distracting.»
She also recalled a time when she visited a courtroom to prepare for a role as a lawyer, but after just 10 minutes, the judge had her removed because he worried her presence would disrupt the proceedings.
While Cher doesn’t mention her driver’s license in her memoir, she does recall a moment when she discovered what was listed on her birth certificate.
For years, Cher believed her name was Cherilyn, only to find out much later that she had legally changed it to Cher.
To her surprise, her birth certificate listed her name as «Cheryl.»
According to Cher, her mother, Georgia Holt, had been in labor for hours, and there was a mix-up when Holt told the nurse the name she intended for her daughter.
When Cher confronted her mother, Holt «simply shrugged,» as Cher recalled in the memoir. «I was only a teenager, and I was in a lot of pain. Give me a break,» Holt replied.
