Charlie Chaplin once shared this story: “I was riding the subway in New York City when I got home and found a pair of gold watches in my pocket.
I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how they got there. So, I decided to take them to the police.”
Charlie Chaplin once recounted an unusual experience: “I was riding the subway in New York City when, upon arriving home, I discovered a pair of gold watches in my pocket.
I couldn’t understand how they got there, so I decided to hand them over to the police.”
The very next day, he received a letter:
“Dear Mr. Chaplin,
I am writing to you as a professional pickpocket. Yesterday, on the subway, I stole a gentleman’s gold watches, but when I saw you, I was so impressed that I decided to gift them to you by slipping them into your pocket.”
A year passed. The police neither found the thief nor the owner of the watches, so the watches were returned to Chaplin.
The newspapers covered the story, and after some time, Chaplin received a second letter:
“Dear Mr. Chaplin,
A year ago, my watches were stolen on the subway. I read in the papers that a pickpocket had gifted them to you. Please keep the watches, Mr. Chaplin.
Since I am just as big a fan of your incredible talent as the thief is, I am also sending a gold chain to go with the watches.”
