Ariana Grande Reveals She Feels Like She’s «Lost a Few Years» From Her Early Pop Stardom: «I’m Totally Serious»
Ariana Grande may have had her own version of an «eternal sunshine» experience.
During the February 3 episode of SmartLess, the 31-year-old pop sensation shared her struggle with remembering certain periods of her life.
The conversation came up when Will Arnett recalled a «strange» U.K. talk show appearance from a decade ago with Grande, which he said was on Chatty Man.
However, the «We Can’t Be Friends» singer didn’t remember being on the show.
«I’m missing a couple of years,» Grande admitted. «I’m being super serious. I literally don’t remember a few years.»
Arnett, 54, jokingly responded, calling her behavior «disgraceful,» but quickly added, «No, you were great.»
Grande then reflected on her experience as a 19-year-old when her debut album, Yours Truly, was released.
«I never expected it to take over the way it did, in such a beautiful way,» she explained. «There was no way to prepare for that.»
Before her pop stardom, Grande considered herself a «theater nerd.»
«I am a theater nerd through and through,» she said.
«And then this insane journey with music just took over my life for a really long time. It was extraordinary but also very challenging.»
Looking back, she noted that her rise to fame wasn’t what she had expected but was nonetheless «so beautiful and gratifying.»
She recalled, «When I was younger, especially after doing 13 on Broadway, I thought, ‘How cool!
I get to be part of the theater community.
I can’t wait to be the understudy for Thoroughly Modern Millie and maybe be in the ensemble on the days I’m not the swing.'»
Grande added, «I thought I’d do music on the side and hope that someone would listen to it—just a little side project, and maybe someone would be into it.»
In another part of the interview, the Wicked star bonded with Sean Hayes over their mutual admiration for Ethan Slater.
«Yes, he loves you so much,» Grande replied. «I love him too,» Hayes said.
«He did Good Night, Oscar with me in Chicago, and now he’s in Wicked—and you two are dating!
You make a perfect couple.»
