An orphan inherits her grandfather’s old sofa, but when she sits on it, the cushions crack under her weight
When Victoria returned to her grandfather’s house in Iowa, she noticed that his beloved sofa was still sitting in the living room. She took a seat, reminiscing about her childhood, but then heard a crack.
What she uncovered inside would change her life forever. Victoria’s mother, Ella, had abandoned her when she was young, leaving for New York with her lover to escape the hardships of their life in Iowa.

Victoria’s father, Edward, worked tirelessly as both a delivery driver during the day and a warehouse worker at night, but his income wasn’t enough to keep them afloat.
Compounding their struggles, Victoria’s grandfather Silas was nearing the end of his battle with cancer. Ella, exhausted by the burdens of poverty, chose to leave Iowa with her boyfriend and start anew in New York.
Victoria, just 15 at the time, was still grappling with her mother’s abandonment when tragedy struck: her father died in a terrible accident, leaving her and Silas alone.
Though Ella occasionally visited or called after Edward’s death, Silas disapproved of her entirely. He had never liked her, and after her departure, his disdain only grew.
A year later, when Silas passed away, Victoria found herself with no choice but to move to New York to live with her mother. Ella’s boyfriend, Dave, made it clear that he didn’t welcome her, and Victoria felt the same way about him.
Over time, constant tension between them led to Dave leaving, and Ella’s relationship with her daughter grew even more strained.
Dave, before leaving, told Ella that he couldn’t stay because of Victoria’s “obnoxious” attitude. For a while, Ella scraped by on the money Dave had left, splurging on expensive gifts, but eventually, the money ran out.

Ella refused to get a job and instead began searching for a new man. Exhausted by her mother’s carelessness, Victoria focused on her education.
She applied for scholarships and eventually secured a spot at New York University, where she met Kevin. They worked part-time together at a cafe, and their friendship blossomed into romance.
Soon, they were living together, and Victoria found herself pregnant just before their graduation. However, Kevin abandoned her upon hearing the news of the pregnancy.
With nowhere else to turn, Victoria returned to her mother, only to be turned away. Determined to finish her degree, Victoria did so with unwavering resolve and then returned to Iowa.
The house was in disrepair, surrounded by overgrown weeds, and the door wouldn’t open. Victoria called for help and noticed a young man chopping firewood in a nearby yard. She asked if he could assist her.
The man looked up, smiled, and agreed to help. As he limped toward her, Victoria realized who he was. “Tim?” she asked, surprised.
“Victoria? Is that really you?” he replied, equally astonished. “What are you doing here?” She didn’t recognize him at first but quickly apologized.

“I didn’t recognize you, Tim. You’ve changed so much! You were so chubby when we were kids!” “Yeah, life does that to you,” he laughed. “But what brings you back here?”
Victoria explained, and Tim, noticing her limp, offered to help with the heavy door. Together, they managed to open it. Once inside, the dust and cobwebs revealed the extent of the house’s neglect.
Tim offered to help clean, and despite Victoria’s initial protests, they spent hours clearing the space. As they cleaned, Victoria shared her story—her abandonment by her mother, Kevin’s rejection, and how she ended up back in Iowa.
When it came time to clean Silas’ cherished sofa, Victoria shared how much it had meant to him and the fond memories she had of it. “Before you sit down,” Tim said, “let me clean it first.
You’ve done enough, and this dust isn’t good for the baby.” As Tim worked, Victoria continued to reminisce about the sofa.
«Grandpa used to yell at me for jumping on it, testing its springs. I miss him so much,» she said with a smile. When Victoria finally sat down, the sofa cracked under her weight.
To her surprise, she felt something hidden inside. They uncovered a small chest filled with gold coins, jewelry, and a letter addressed to Victoria.

“I wanted to give this to you sooner, but you were too young,” the letter began. “This is your inheritance, left for you by your grandfather. I know how hard things have been for you, and I hope this helps. Love, Silas.”
Victoria was overwhelmed with emotion, and Tim couldn’t help but marvel at the discovery. “That’s quite the sofa!” With the gold and jewels, Victoria was able to renovate her home and set up a room for her baby.
Tim was there to help every step of the way, from arranging carpenters to attending doctor’s appointments with her. Months later, Victoria gave birth to a healthy baby boy.
Tim continued to support her, and their bond deepened. Eventually, Tim proposed, and Victoria joyfully accepted. Together, they built a life full of love, with the blessing of Victoria’s grandfather’s sofa.
The money from the treasures allowed them to start a small business together, creating a brighter future. The lesson here is that while there may be delays in life, nothing is ever truly denied.
Victoria’s struggles ultimately led her to her rightful place with Tim, who was always meant to be by her side.
