A mysterious bundle was hurled from a speeding car — and whatever was inside…

The sky was a blanket of steel-gray clouds, and a biting wind tore down from the mountains, sending slick leaves skittering across the empty road.

John had been behind the wheel for more than two hours, racing back to the city after an unexpected emergency at work.

His German Shepherd, Barbara, dozed beside him, her head resting lightly against the window.

As the fog thickened and visibility dropped, John’s headlights caught sight of a slow-moving vehicle up ahead. Something about its movements made his instincts prickle.

He eased off the accelerator, watching closely. Then, without warning, the rear door of the car popped open — and something dark and bulky was hurled onto the shoulder of the road.

The door slammed shut again, and the car vanished into the mist and drizzle. John’s stomach dropped.

“Did you see that, girl?” he asked. Barbara was already alert, ears pricked, her eyes locked on the shadowed shape by the road. At first glance, it resembled a garbage bag. But then—it twitched.

He didn’t hesitate. Pulling onto the gravel shoulder, John climbed out, icy rain needling his skin through the collar of his coat. The object was wrapped in a grimy blanket, bound with a length of frayed blue rope.

As he stepped closer, a faint whimper rose from within—fragile and terrified. His heart pounding, John crouched and quickly loosened the rope.

What he uncovered stopped him cold: a tiny boy, no older than two, soaked to the bone, trembling uncontrollably, lips turning blue from the cold.

Without thinking, John shrugged off his jacket and wrapped it tightly around the child, rushing him into the warm car.

Barbara gently nudged the boy, licking his cheek as he let out a weak sob.

Paramedics arrived minutes later. They confirmed the toddler was suffering from severe hypothermia — but he’d made it just in time.

At the station, police began piecing together what happened. The child matched the description of a missing boy from a local foster home.

The following morning, John received word that the boy was stable, now in the care of child protection services.

That night, as John sat by the window with Barbara curled up at his feet, he couldn’t shake the feeling in his chest — a deep, strange certainty. This wasn’t a coincidence. He was meant to find that child.
