A man discovers a car submerged in the river and alerts the authorities
After being missing for almost 12 years, a Russian couple, Ilya Zhirnov, 25, and his girlfriend Kira Cherkasova, 22, were discovered inside a car submerged in the Volga River in central Russia in 2017.
The couple had disappeared in December 2005 when Ilya took his father’s car to pick up Kira from work.

A thorough search was carried out at the time, but with no evidence to go on, the case was eventually closed, leaving their families without any closure.
However, they never gave up hope that Ilya and Kira would one day be found.
The car, along with the couple’s remains, was unexpectedly discovered by a local diving enthusiast.
While exploring the waters near a nearby beach, he came across the vehicle and immediately contacted the authorities.
The following day, the car was hauled from the river, and Ilya and Kira were identified using personal documents, such as IDs found in the vehicle.

Authorities suspect that the accident was caused by icy road conditions, leading to the couple losing control of the car, which then plunged into the river.
The investigation is still ongoing.
We extend our deepest condolences for the tragic loss of these two young lives. May they rest in peace.
