An Alabama family is preparing for a long-awaited homecoming, as their baby boy is finally expected to leave the hospital after more than a year of care.
Carli Brasfield underwent an emergency C-section in June 2024 at just 26 weeks pregnant. Her son, Barrett, was born weighing only one pound.

Due to severe lung complications and repeated infections, Barrett spent eight months in the Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at UAB, followed by another four months at Children’s of Alabama’s NICU.
In April, a significant milestone arrived—Barrett was stable enough to receive a tracheostomy. Now, after 403 days in the hospital, he’s expected to be discharged on Monday.
“It’s been a battle from day one. Every decision has been about what we can do to get him strong enough to come home,” Carli said.
Barrett’s first year was unlike most. Instead of celebrating his first bottle or crawl, Carli and her husband, Roman, found joy in moments like changing his diaper for the first time—or hearing him cry.

“Thanks to the Passy Muir Valve, we recently heard his voice for the first time,” Roman said. “Most parents might dread the sound of crying, but for us, it was a beautiful moment.”
The family had hoped to bring Barrett home by fall, then Christmas, but setbacks extended his stay. Now, with his health finally catching up, that dream is about to become reality.
“Crossing the threshold of our home with him is going to be incredible,” Roman shared. “His room’s been ready for months, and we can’t wait to see him in it.”
Barrett, now full of energy, sits up, laughs, plays, and eats—showing little sign of the long fight behind him.
“He’s such a happy soul. You’d never guess he’s spent over 400 days in the hospital,” Carli said.
Though he’ll return home with a trach, ventilator, and G-tube, doctors believe he’ll gradually outgrow those needs with time and a few surgeries.
